Intro

You may ask why a heritage website and the reason is simply that as part of an African Caribbean / West Indian people who answered the call to rebuild Britain after the 2nd World War. I believe that those of us who are still around have story to be told of their journey as a primary historical source. The last UK census highlighted how important that is as it showed how our community is gradually decreasing and in a couple of decades or less there would be none of my generation left to share their story.

It is also a response from individuals, organisations and institutions who have asked me to share my experience as it contributes to the story of Caribbean people who settled in The East End of London particularly Newham during the 1950/60s.

This website is an opportunity for younger people to be aware of their parents / grandparents’ individual and collective contributions not only in East London but wherever we settled in the UK. Furthermore, I hope it would encourage interest in family history and the preservation of African, African Caribbean, West Indian or simply Black Heritage.

The website is not all about my life and the 60 years well spent in the East End of London but an opportunity to share with you some of the H Cumberbatch archives collection.

“Until the lion tells his side of the story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
