Black Awareness

1960 – 1970

The 1960s and 1970s opened my mind to think differently from my earlier colonial experience and even to identify with the name Black was a challenge. Living with the call for change, combating worldwide Imperial and Colonial systems through class struggles and liberation movements around the world. However, with the use of literature, tv documentaries, media reports many of us embraced the process of change. – (photos of Black Power, Zimbabwe, Azania South Africa etc

Labour party – The party offered opportunities to be involved in making changes in the community and I was encouraged to get involved in community work. Two councillors in particular the late Abe Wolfe and Marjorie Helps and later Councillor Ken Palmer stands out.

As agent for Park ward one of the lesser offices outside of elections I had the opportunity not to have one but two during the same year. The May 1979 General elections for Arthur Lewis and the first European elections Alf Lomas on the 7th an 10th to get involved in community work and led me towards community involvement with Clifford Hill from Community renewal and Eddie Warner the Newham Community council officer Eddie Warner based at the time in Liverpool Road Canning Town E16. Became a member of the Youth subcommittee but unable to fully support our young Black Youth who at the time were being harassed at their dances at the Harold Road Centre and not being backed by the Newham Community Council.
